Biography

Richard Anthony Monsour (born May 4, 1937), better known by his stage name Dick Dale, is an American rock guitarist, known as The King of the Surf Guitar. He pioneered and created what many call the surf music style, drawing on Middle-Eastern music scales and experimenting with reverberation. He worked closely with Fender to produce custom made amplifiers, including the first-ever 100-watt guitar amplifier. More...

He came on 1 1/2 hours late… and talked to much…Standing only… That’s a long time to stand in one spot…

At the age of 76, Dick Dale still rocks! His guitar playing is still amazing and he really engages the crowd. He played all of his favorites, some cool covers, and when he rocked Miserlou, it was one of my favorite all time concert moments.

Opening band started too late (8:45pm) and did too many numbers. the 2nd band was lousy, too. Then, Dick Dale didn’t get started until 10:30 (too late!)

Dick Dale is an American Icon and after seeing him live I know why! What a great treat to see him up close and personal. He was terrific and seem to be having the time of his live. How often do you get to enjoy someone that is a genius and loves every minute of it! If you have the opportunity to catch him, don’t even think about it.

This performance by the surf guitar master was extraordinary. I grew up in California listening to Dick Dale so he’s been a huge part of my musical life for decades. It was a real treat to experience him in person & to witness his son on drums. That guy is amazing! The bass player Sam was also tops. I’ll be sure to keep my service provider notifications on so I’ll know when Dick Dale comes back to town. Fabulous show!

Dick’s talent is embedded in his soul. His music is loud but it will mesmerize you. He refuses to retire because he loves what he does–what a spirit!

At the intimate venue the Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale (4/20), Dick Dale at almost 76 gave a tour de force performance on the staccato, vibrato power of the left-handed Fender surf guitar. At almost 65myself and a native Californian, many of the crowd revered him as the “Godfather of Surf Punk Rock.” to me it was just a great master keeping the music alive (Dick is one the prime influences on Jeff Beck)

Don’t miss it! Dick Dale is timeless; a great showman; still has the magic. He rocks the place (and anyone within a few miles) with hard pounding, soulful guitar. His bass guy, Sam, is top notch and his son Jimmy is fantastic on drums, absolutely world class. Three guys clearly having fun and loving their music. Highly recommended.

The Culture Room has a lot to be desired.
Small place, dirty and flooded but over all it is a good place to get a drink and relax.
The warm up groups were fair but Dick Dale and Jimmy Dale made up for anything lost!

He might have lost a step, but how many 75 year old cancer survivers can put on a show better than guys one third their age? Always an awesome show!

AMAZING! Had seen him years ago and was somewhat expecting him to phone it in given age and health issues but this was every bit as good as before. Wonderful to see a living legend still being everything that made him a legend. King of Surf Guitar, father of the heavy metal sound, legendary left hand upside down guitar hero, first 100 amp, or for any of a whole list of things that may make you want to see him – GO SEE THE SHOW you won’t be disappointed. Just fantastic guitar and showmanship without uneeded special effects. Dick is the real deal. Do yourself a favor and GO TRIPPIN!

What a treat to hear a legend perform and do it in a manner that, as he put it, is like playing for you in your living room. His son Jimmy is an amazing drummer and the bass player was following every change Dick threw at him like a faithful hound. Great, tight band with a great, tight show.
