This was my 10th Phish Show (yes, I’m a relatively new Phan), but what a show it was!! High energy, killer set list and amazing jams. Trey Anastasio, coming off of the “Fare Thee Well” Grateful Dead shows (the first of which I saw in Santa Clara) is playing incredibly well…you could say he’s been en Fuego! The rest of the band was also truly amazing…the sum of their parts are truly greater than each individual. I love this band and, while I’m more of the Deadhead generation (having seen the Dead nine times, seven of them with Jerry Garcia), Phish clearly are the heirs apparent of the Jam Band scene. I hope they keep it up. For as long as they do, I’ll be at least one show per year. Hell, if I was younger, I would seriously consider following them for an entire summer tour! If you haven’t experienced a Phish show, you need to add it to your bucket list. They’re that good (and fun)!

Long time Dead fan, first time Phish show though I have their music. Show was excellent, even better than I expected. They are not only tight musically, they have a lot of fun performing. There aren’t too many artists today who do it for the enjoyment of making music.

I appreciate Phish’s approach and what they do, and I try to see them once a year somewhere. So not a crazy die-hard. But you can read the reviews on on the die-hard fan sites too and you’ll find the same review – Friday nite at The Forum 2016 was the proverbial turd in the punch bowl.

I have been to the Mann many times over the years and the sound on the lawn is always horrible. If you can have a normal conversation with someone during peak moments then the sound is too low. It feels like you are at a backyard picnic and some band with a crappy PA is playing. It is not only the level but the mix as well. The mix was actually better in the parking lot behind the stage when I was leaving during Harry Hood. They must know that there is an issue because they put a small stack of speakers in the back of the lawn near the walkway. Unfortunately this was all treble until the subwoofer kicked in during he last song. And that subwoofer was out of sync for us in the middle of the lawn. If you can’t get a seat inside, don’t bother.

Especially when it’s in the rain. Can’t beat a 90 degree summer night where it gently rains the whole show. Just enough to keep everyone comfortable and make it an event to remember, without swamping the grounds and creating a big mess. Phish has always had a knack for playing to the crowd, and tonight was no different. Lots of fun.

No words! To attend a phish show is unlike anything else that’s around today! I’m an old dead head and I LOVE Phish and think Trey is a master. He knows how to start slow and build up. His endurance on stage is unbeatable. It’s a party from start to end. If anybody loves jam bands and has never seen them then it’s a must for their next time around. I see Phish cover bands to satisfy my Phish music needs till the next tour.
I did not like how the massive crowd situation was handled getting into the Mann. Someone should have made an announcement for half the crowd to enter at the opposite entrance which was empty. People were getting squashed. Def could have been done in a more orderly fashion.

Sound, performance, audience was perfect. Craft beer selection consisted of St. Archer and a couple taps of stone here and there. With 150 craft breweries in San Diego, vistors should get a better choice in craft beer other than fake Coors subsidiaries.

Entering and leaving the lot was very easy and quick but we had to park at the fairgrounds and had a very long walk to the venue entrance. Once we got in the venue someone told us about shuttles but we did not see any until after the show. They need to have staff working in the lots before and after to direct you to shuttles if they are available.

January 01, 2016 show was incredible. My only complaint was Madison Square Garden added more “nosebleed” seats and me and my friend felt incredibly closed in. The ceiling was very low. We didn’t feel like a part of the main room really. Add to this closed in feeling the fact we were behind the stage and not feeling part of the main room was heightened.
Moving on, Phish absolutely crushed it. New Years Day is a day filled with hangovers and it was great to hear Phish in all their high energy glory.
I also got to see them on January 02, 2016. This show was even higher energy than the 1st. Phish must have turned up Fishmans drums in the mix because it was much louder and clearer. The subwoofer was cranked up to the max it felt like. I enjoyed the subwoofer immensely more than I ever have. The lights were also more insane than ever. Kuroda absolutely was on point. 10/10 Phish rocked MSG like never before.

I had never seen Phish before, primarily because their touring routes never came anywhere near wherever I happened to be. I admit that I don’t really follow their music, but I am a fan of their album “Billy Breathes”, and I was aware of their status as one of the most popular touring bands in the world, especially since they more or less inherited the fanbase of the Grateful Dead, when those icons of ‘counter-culture’ and spacey jams left the road following the death of leader Jerry Garcia in 1995. Like the Dead, Phish have earned a reputation for being adventurous on stage, and also like the Dead, have pretty much stuck to the same cities when they became popular enough to play amphitheaters and stadiums. I’m a big jazz fan, and I love a good jam. I’m a follower of both Widespread Panic and Dave Matthews Band, two of Phish’s peers on the jam-band circuit, and have seen each multiple times (of the two, Panic is my favorite). Each spring, I hoped that Phish would schedule a show in the Mpls/St. Paul area so that I could justify a five-hour drive to finally see them at last. They hadn’t played the twin cities since 2000, although leader Trey Anastasio has come through with his solo group from time to time; I passed on those shows because I wanted to see him within the context of his day job. This particular concert was the opening night of Phish’s 2016 summer tour, and while I’m very glad that I finally got to see them, I still thought the concert as a whole was just above average as a whole. It’s not because I didn’t know the majority of the music; I’ve greatly enjoyed shows by many artists over the years without knowing their catalog at the time. It’s because I thought that the show took quite a long time to really get going, groove-wise. During the first half, I was most impressed by “Wolfman’s Brother” (song #2 in the set) and a jubilant cover of bluegrass king Bill Monroe’s “Uncle Pen” (song #10). I found my attention wandering much of time in between those two songs, although I never left my seat. The pacing during the first half of this well over three-hour concert was erratic, at least to my ears. I know that I’m in the minority here; Phish have a devoted fanbase, after all–but it was obvious that I wasn’t the only one who felt that way, because a lot of people came and went in my aisle for much of that first set–and most of them stayed put during the second, when the level of performance and choice of songs were much more impressive. After a thirty-minute intermission, the band arrived strong with a great , funk-drenched performance of “Mike’s Song”, and the pacing rarely lagged, until song #22 (“Billy Breathes”, oddly enough), then it was back to mostly languid pacing–but the show was nearly over, so it didn’t really matter. Personality-wise, the band preferred to let the music do the talking, so there was no mention of the 16-year gap in between concerts in the twin cities, nor the fact that this was opening night of their current tour. Trey limited himself to a few niceties early on but otherwise was all business (and that’s not at all a bad thing; last winter’s Dead & Company concert at the Forum in L.A. was like that, and it was one of my favorite shows of the year). Altogether, I left this concert with a great appreciation of these guys as musicians (particularly bassist Mike Gordon), and I was glad that I finally can say that I saw Phish–I doubt that I would drive so far to see them again, unless I was given a free ticket or something. Still, flaws aside, it was worthwhile; I just wish that the first half was as on the point as the second.
